Mercedes Howard, known as "Ya Girl Cedes," is a vibrant radio personality with deep roots in broadcasting, following in the footsteps of her father and grandparents. From traffic reporting in San Diego to becoming one of the few African American women to host her own top-rated radio show in Denver, Cedes has built a career on breaking barriers and connecting with her community. Now a mother, she is deeply committed to child development and empowering youth through education, mentorship, and media.

John W. Edwards, III is a mental health advocate and licensed barber with over 20 years of experience supporting the well-being of men of color. As the founder of Better Cuts Mental Health Alliance, he blends trauma-informed barbering with culturally responsive mental health services to break stigma and close health disparities. Currently pursuing his Master of Social Work at SDSU, John continues to lead innovative community efforts that uplift, connect, and transform lives.

Jerica Williams is a trailblazing coach, Hall of Fame athlete, and the only active female coach in Division I Men’s College Basketball for the 2023–24 season. As the Founder of HER: Power Productions, Jerica uplifts young women through mentorship, storytelling, and community empowerment. Her journey from NCAA athlete to award winning coach and businesswoman embodies resilience, purpose, and the power of representation.

Terence N. Brown is the founder of Rez Runner, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by addiction through movement, recovery, and community connection. A member of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Terence turned to running as a personal healing tool and now uses it to foster mental wellness and break generational cycles. His work creates safe, empowering spaces for transformation through physical activity and cultural resilience.

Asante Sefa-Boakye is the founder and CEO of Black Star Polo, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing aquatic access and water safety in African and African-American communities. A San Diego native and global advocate, his work has empowered youth from San Diego to several African nations through culturally rooted water safety education and aquatic programming. As both a water polo coach and hip-hop artist, Asante blends creativity and activism to build a more inclusive future in aquatics.

Latoya McKelvin-Westpoint is a San Diego-based movement educator, professional dancer, and founder of Movement Matters Collective—a wellness initiative offering culturally affirming Pilates, yoga, and dance programming to underserved communities. With certifications in Pilates and yoga and over four years of community-based wellness leadership, she brings joyful, accessible movement to all ages. Latoya also teaches in the Dance Department at SDSU and empowers youth through school-based programs that use movement as a tool for healing and social change. Brian Westpoint is the co-founder of Movement Matters Collective, a grassroots initiative promoting health equity through culturally-rooted, community-centered wellness programs. With over a decade of experience in environmental education, special needs support, and climate justice, Brian has led efforts like the Black Men’s Wellness Initiative and maternal health workshops for communities of color. His work is grounded in the belief that true justice starts with community-led healing and that wellness is a fundamental right—not a luxury.

Melissa Hernandez is the Chief Executive Director of PHATCAMP Inc., a San Diego nonprofit empowering underrepresented youth through sports, leadership, and community-building events. A devoted mother and peacebuilder, she leads initiatives like the annual Met Gala and community softball programs that promote wellness and unity. Melissa is committed to preventing violence and uplifting underserved communities through advocacy and compassionate leadership.

Ejay Perkins is a San Diego native and the founder of Urbn Run, a thriving wellness community with over 200 members. A passionate advocate for fitness and connection, Ejay graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's in Communications. He currently works as a Governmental Manager for the Port of San Diego and is pursuing his NASM certification to become a certified personal trainer. Through Urbn Run, he continues to inspire others to prioritize health, community, and movement.

In addition to our guest speakers, youth from our Rising Tides Youth Leadership Program will be sharing their powerful experiences with the ocean. This year long mentorship program provides leadership training, career exploration, and hands-on experience mentoring younger participants in our Surf & Science program. With professional development, these future leaders gain valuable skills in ocean conservation, outdoor recreation, and community engagement.

This class offers a powerful opportunity to cultivate a spirit of liberation within ourselves. Through mindful movement and breath, we'll journey to find freedom in our minds by releasing limiting thoughts, in our bodies by moving with ease and strength, and in our hearts by opening to compassion and joy.

This all-levels class yoga invites us to be inspired by the expansive energy of the ocean to deepen our connection to freedom, joy, and collective well-being. Come breathe, move, and celebrate surrounded by the elements!

This class will be lead by Latoya Mckelvin-Westpoint Founder of Movement Matters Collective.

  • Who is eligible to participate in the free surf lessons?
    The Free surf lesson are open to individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced surfer, everyone is welcome to join and enjoy the experience.
  • Do I need to bring my own surfing equipment?
    No, you do not need to bring your own surf equipment. We will provide all the necessary surfing gear, including surfboards and wetsuits.
  • Are there any requirements or restrictions for participation?
    To participate in the free surf lessons, participants must be able to swim and feel comfortable in the water. Minors under the age of 18 will need parental or guardian consent to participate.
  • Will there be instructors available to teach and guide participants during the surf lessons?
    YES! Our instructors are experienced and will be present throughout the event to provide guidance, instructions, and ensure the safety of all participants.
  • What other activities will be available during the Juneteenth event?
    In addition to the free surf lessons, our Juneteenth event will feature a range of activities to celebrate the occasion. Yoga sessions, Interactive games, music, educational booths, and opportunities for community engagement and dialogue.
  • What should I bring?
    We recommend bringing the following items to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience during the free surf lessons on Juneteenth: - Swimwear: Please come dressed in appropriate swimwear that allows you to move freely in the water and that will go under a wetsuit. - Towel: It's a good idea to bring a towel to dry off after the surf lesson. You can also use it to sit on the beach or to keep warm if needed. - Hat and Sunglasses: Consider bringing a hat and sunglasses to shield your face and eyes from the sun. - Change of Clothes: It's a good idea to bring a change of clothes for after the surf lesson. This way, you can change into dry clothes and feel comfortable while enjoying the rest of the event! - Beach Blanket to sit on when you're chilling on the grass or beach. - Sunscreen: Please make sure to bring reef safe sunscreen to protect your skin and protect our native wildlife. - Anything else you would bring for a beach day, it is an all day event!
  • Is there a cost associated with the Juneteenth event or the surf lessons?
    Both the Juneteenth event and the surf lessons are completely free of charge. Our nonprofit organization is committed to providing these activities as a gift to the community and promoting access to outdoor experiences for everyone. However, in past years, we were able to provide free food at our Juneteenth celebration thanks to a generous sponsor. However, due to changes in sponsorship and new administrative policies, we are working toward becoming more self-sufficient in funding our programs and events. As a result, food will no longer be free at this year’s event with online pricing starting at $8 per meal ticket and in person will be $10.
  • How can I support Paddle for Peace Juneteenth event?
    We appreciate your interest in supporting our cause! There are several ways you can contribute. You can spread the word about our event and invite friends and family to participate. Additionally, you can consider making a donation to help us cover the costs of equipment, entertainment, and other event expenses. We deeply value any support you can provide to help us continue offering these free surf lessons for Juneteenth.
  • Can I volunteer to assist during the Juneteenth event?
    Absolutely! We welcome volunteers who are passionate about our mission and want to contribute to the event's success. Whether it's assisting with registration, helping participants with gear, or providing general event support, your time and effort are greatly appreciated.
